London Logos

My favourite London logo at the moment is the one for the London Women’s Clinic.

They are currently advertising an ‘Inseminar’ on the tube - a seminar about insemination. Clever? or Weird? You decide.

Treasure T-shirts

We just had a print run of t-shirts. They look awesome! I’m pleased that I can totally recommend Advertees down in Cornwall - great customer service, and a perfect print job. We’ll be using them again for sure.

Thanks guys,
Ronald

London Mayor Elections

I’ve not updated this in a while - but it’s time to remind any remaining readers that the London Mayoral Elections are TODAY. Vote now and have your say!

Cheers,

Ronald

National Express East Coast

I am travelling up to Scotland this morning - this (admittedly short) post is brought to you by National Express East Coast railway’s free wifi.

You can pay more for wifi than the price of my train ticket if you want… Incredible!

American Elections

The worst thing about the US Presidential elections in 2000 and 2004 is that they’ve made watching US elections not fun any more. No longer do CNN and NBC compete to make the most wildly inaccurate calls perhaps even before polling has opened.
I want to know exactly how much they think Obama/Clinton/Romney/McCain has won/lost by already!

I’m having to rely on the slightly more accurate Betfair for my odds… which essentially say “nobody knows yet”
The odds say the winners will be:
DEM Clinton 54% (presumably won’t be decided today)
GOP McCain 90% (presumably hoping to nail it today)
PREZ McCain 33% Clinton 31% Obama 29% (DEM 63%)
[Aside: Al Gore is still at around 1%…?!]

Confessions of a QuizMaster

My friend and fellow event organiser David has started a blog detailing his work as a QuizMaster.

Did you know that the band Toto (most famous for their 1982 hit ‘Africa’) wrote and performed the soundtrack to the film Dune? Awesome.

All the best,

nofollow

Your rank on Google is essentially calculated based on which other sites have ‘voted’ for you by providing you with a link.

Techies among you may be aware of the ‘nofollow’ tag which can be appended to links in order to prevent Google from counting it as a ‘vote’ for the site and ignoring the link. This tag is automatically applied to comments by most blogging software in order to prevent spam.
I’m a fairly keen internet user and blog commenter and I will namecheck my site if it’s relevant to the content, if I feel I am adding some value to a page. I feel rewarded to receive a tiny search engine vote as a linkback if the blogger agrees to it. However, I feel I’m being undermined in my efforts by the ‘nofollow’ tag - these tiny votes are often not counting and my genuine interest in a particular subject will perhaps never be recognised by search engines.

Nofollow is ostensibly to prevent spam, but it isn’t really working, and it’s penalising genuine users: all blogs and new/interesting content must be suffering. Nofollow is ok for sites which can be updated without ever being checked again (will these count as a decent vote anyway?), but Wordpress attaches nofollow to any blog comments even after I’ve manually accept them as genuinely relevant. I do want to support genuinely relevant links on my blog and I don’t want to nofollow them. Wikipedia, which already has over-active editors, shouldn’t need to have ‘nofollow’ tags (indeed a democratic vote didn’t want nofollow tags but this was overruled).

Nofollow is a lazy and poor way of dealing with problems that would be better fixed with better internal calculations (which Google is supposed to be the master of), and I believe that Google should quickly look at ignoring it’s own nofollow tags.

I’ll be removing ‘nofollow’ from this blog and would encourage others to do the same.

(Edit: I can recommend the DoFollow plug-in to WordPress users)

January Update: Comments disallowed on this post due to high levels of spam attempts… sigh!

New River Path

This weekend, we walked a section of the New River Path (from Angel to Manor House). A good way to see interesting parts of North London - recommended places of note: Mucky Pup Pub, Get Stuffed taxidermist in Canonbury, Orwellian bleakness of the Stoke Newington reservoirs, views leading up to Alexandra Palace. All in all it’s a great walk - maybe I’ll continue to follow it up to Hertfordshire…

Rejected Clues

Sometimes I think of a clue which is simply too hard to use during a treasure hunt. Here’s an example of a clue which was rejected. You have been warned: this is super-tough.

Each word is clued as a sequence of numbers.

First the letters are converted into numbers by alphabetical order (A=1, B=2, C=3,…, Z=26)

Then the first letter is added to the last letter to give the first number in the clue sequence

The second letter is added to the second last letter to give the second number in the clue sequence

And so on, until you get to the middle letter(s) - there might be one or two - which gives you the last number in the clue sequence

e.g. KLM = 11-12-13 is clued as 24-12
ABACAB = 1-2-1-3-1-2 is clued as 3-3-4

Here are the three puzzles then, they refer to London locations:
10-12-21-12
44-16-22
4-30-25-16-16

Good luck!
